Rorschach Rabbits
Statement
"Rorschach Rabbits" is a compositional series of one hundred individual pieces that make up a whole. The entirety invites the world to delve into the malleability of identity and the tension between creation and dissolution. Rooted in the symbolic world of stuffed animal rabbits, this piece blurs the lines between innocent perception and abstraction, exploring the intersection of the organic and the constructed.
The process began with the raw, chaotic gesture of spreading paper across the floor, where I freely scattered, smeared, and splattered India ink in various dilutions. This spontaneous act invited the ink to move beyond the surface, interacting with the physical space, becoming both medium and metaphor. The ink consumed and dissolved the stuffed rabbits, representing the forces of preservation and decay as they merged, suggesting an intimate relationship between the self and its surrounding influences.
Through the incorporation of charcoal and Conté, I introduced intentionality to the otherwise unpredictable marks, using these materials as tools for anchoring meaning within the chaos. Each stroke reflected a deeper, evolving understanding of the subject, mirroring the complex ways in which identity shifts and transforms over time.
In an effort to deepen my connection to the subject, I closed my eyes and allowed myself to draw only the feeling of the rabbits, rather than their exact form. This practice of blind drawing helped me tap into the raw emotion and essence of the subject, transcending the literal and embracing the emotional undercurrents that define identity. Through this process, the lines and marks became a reflection of my subconscious understanding, abstracting the rabbits into something more fluid and intangible.
The visual traces of the rabbits, embedded within the ink's frenzy, act as fragments of a larger narrative, trapped between structure and formlessness. This interplay—where the organic meets the abstract—mirrors the tension between order and disorder, creation and destruction, revealing how external forces shape internal experiences.
The title draws inspiration from the Rorschach inkblot test, a psychological tool meant to reveal the unconscious through abstract forms. Similarly, "Rorschach Rabbits" invites viewers to project their own interpretations onto the fluidity of the work. Just as inkblots hold infinite meanings, these rabbits—caught in the ink’s atmosphere—suggest a multiplicity of readings: innocence, vulnerability, or even metamorphosis.
Ultimately, "Rorschach Rabbits" is an exploration of the delicate balance between control and surrender, abstraction and reality, offering a space for reflection on how identity is continuously shaped by unseen forces, both within and beyond us.
